Why Newfield?

My training for ICF accredited Newfield Coaching program

I am training as an ICF accredited Newfield Coaching Program, an ACTP program (Accredited Coach Training Program). I did a lot of research before choosing Newfield for myself as something that supported, extended and ultimately could be part of realizing my passion for coaching, so when my inspirational friend Malti Bhojwani asked me to write down a few of the things that brought me to Newfield, here is what I said:

My biggest learning
The biggest learning is a very personal one; that I am blessed to be on this journey and the path is supporting my happiness and purpose in ways that I could never have imagined before I signed on with Newfield. [All very fru fru what do you mean James!?]
The working definition of happiness I am using here is "achieving some balanced combination of Peacefulness and Productivity" - this means purpose for me in my personal life, my personal and professional relationships which have moved up another level and my effectiveness in the leadership roles I assume in my life.
I am learning to make greater distinctions, fully aware of the observer that I am, the bias I bring and my context - I have written a lot about these in previous years, especially the importance of bias as a hiring manager - but until now I didn't have the precision of distinction that Newfield has given me.
From my earliest years, language has been a source of fascination, pride and no small success - I have had a passion and curiosity for use and accuracy of language (that never included the ability to spell!) and so to find a philosophy, pedagogy if you will (!) that fully validates this lifetime obsession is both thrilling and humbling. I say humbling because I had no idea how incompletely I had been thinking about it - but now I have a path to far greater understanding of what and why I have been so intrigued by language all this time.
What really surprised me
The Somatic trainers, Chris Balsley and Beatriz Garcia completely shook me up, and I chose that work shook advisedly (see the next section). I thought I knew the ideas behind what we carry physically and how our body language plays a role in our impact - but in retrospect, I now know how massively I have underestimated these. The simple tool of coherency has transformed my coaching practice in the way that I am able to bring insight and reflection to a client, the body of work in our physical dispositions combined with the practical ability to come back to "centre" is adding value multiple times in every day.
When I signed up, I wasn’t expecting…
TRE and Primal Dance; TRE stands for Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises
TRE is a simple technique that uses exercises to release stress or tension from the body that accumulate from every day circumstances of life, from difficult situations, immediate or prolonged stressful situations, or traumatic life experiences (i.e., natural disasters, social or domestic violence). I feel fortunate to have embraced Yoga, Meditation and am comfortable with unknown influences of music, movement and "enlighted spheres" - but I was not prepared or expecting the life changing forces of TRE.
Equally thrilling, moving and profound mentally and physically was my first exposure to Primal Dance - we are incredibly fortunate to be exposed to practitioners such as Chris and Beatriz - world class, at the very top of their game - I wasn't expecting Newfield to be THIS good!
