Sex trafficking and child sexual exploitation are at the extreme end of the spectrum of issues that continue to shame us as societies, communities and as individuals.
Many of you reading that sentence will agree with me, right up to the last word, why would James pick on me as an individual? why say it is our personal shame? I know that the fact you are even reading this article is evidence that you want to be part of the solution and have nothing to do with the problem, but here it is: if you think you know what is going on, who is involved and who is impacted then I urge you to assume that on all levels the actual situation is much, much worse that you imagined.
I still might not have made my point, how close do you think you are, physically, right now to a child or adult that has been trafficked for sex or exploited sexually? If your answer was any further than the edge of the town or city you are in right now, you are wrong. In 2015, BBC Freedom of Information request showed more than 5,500 alleged sex crimes in UK schools had been reported to police in just 3 months. In 2014, 59% of girls and young women surveyed for GirlGuiding UK said they had faced some form of sexual harassment at school or college in the past year. In 2010, a YouGov poll found 29% of 16 - 18-year-old girls had experienced unwanted sexual touching at school.
My greatest sadness, is not the depths of depravity that we are capable of as humans, because for me that is countered by the extraordinary love and compassion that we will defeat it with, but is the denial of well intentioned, intelligent people. The choices between good and evil have always been simplistic, the way I urge you to think of it today is the choice between awareness and denial. If you are making yourself aware, you are on the path of good, if you seek to avoid, choose not to hear you are choosing to deny and all evil needs to succeed is for us to choose to do nothing or look the other way.
For the sake of awareness, I have compiled this list of where you can learn, share your learning and increase the awareness of those around you. The path to learning starts with awareness that there is a distinct gap in what we know.
